The future prison will have 1,000 detention places calculated at the standard of 4 square meters. Of these, 900 places are for inmates under closed regime, while the remaining 100 places are intended for those classified under maximum security regime.
This project, like the one in Unguriu, Buzau county, is crucial for the modernization of the penitentiary system. It is important that both projects have entered the construction phase. The investment in Berceni exceeds 850 million lei. The construction of the two penitentiaries is the best evidence that the Romanian state is making great efforts to definitively solve the problem of detention places at European standards. These are the first investments started from scratch in many years, but they are supplemented by annual projects to arrange new detention places in existing penitentiaries, said Alina Gorghiu, Minister of Justice.
The future Berceni penitentiary will have a built area of 77,710 square meters and a gross area of 94,263 square meters. The detention area will have 11 pavilions as follows:
Each pavilion will have, besides the detention rooms, commercial points, office, dining hall, social reintegration activity club, classroom, barber shop, telephony, hobby area, library, etc.
Other relevant facilities for both staff and inmates include: infirmary, administrative building for staff (offices, meeting rooms, common administrative spaces, archive, and sports halls with associated changing rooms), quarantine pavilion, sports hall, Visits pavilion.
